Meet the team
Andrew Mirfin – Chief Operations Officer
Andrew is responsible for the development of our short- and long-term strategies across the UK and the European Economic Area. He also manages overall operations and is the main point of communication between the board of directors and stakeholders.
He was previously our UK and EEA head of distribution after joining us from NCI Insurance Services. Prior to NCI, Andrew spent four years as head of network sales at Broker Network (2011-2014) and also had previous roles as a regional sales manager with General Accident & CGU.
James is a seasoned, chartered, risk and insurance practitioner with significant board, committee and top management experience in financial services across Europe, the Middle East and East Africa. He’s been active in financial services since 1986 and currently holds influential positions, including Managing Director of a captive insurance company for a global industry leader and non-executive Director on a number of insurance companies writing business across Europe. James is also the Chair on a number of Risk and Compliance Committees for these companies.
Marcus Hancocks ACII – Chief Underwriting Officer
Marcus develops, leads and manages all technical underwriting and pricing activities across the business. Before joining us in 2018, Marcus worked for various insurance companies where he managed delegated authority schemes and was involved in arranging reinsurance treaties. His time working for MGAs and provincial high street brokers also saw him deal with retail and wholesale clients under delegated authority from insurers.
As well as being an underwriting expert, he’s been instrumental in developing a wide range of insurance products, such as pet, caravan, rent guarantee, property and professional risks.
Rob Gwynn, ACMA – Head of Proposition
Rob is responsible for the development of all our products, including initial specification, governance and managing the development of new systems and product processes. He is driven by customer outcome and leads projects from concept to delivery by managing relationships with key distribution and claim handling partners.
Rob joined BBI nearly five years ago after gaining 20 years’ experience at companies including Egg, Citi, Wesleyan and PayPlan. During this time he was responsible for the performance of a £400million loan portfolio and the transition management of another £90million portfolio.
Joseph Demanuele FCCA FIA CPA – Independent Non-Executive Director
Joseph has been an independent Non-Executive Director since 2018. He also holds NED positions with other insurance entities.
Before retiring from full-time employment, Joseph was COO at the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) where he chaired the Board of Management and Resources. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Malta International Training Centre Ltd (MITC).
Other previous roles include General Manager of Middlesea Valletta Life (MSV), General Manager and Executive Director of Growth Investments Ltd and Senior Manager at Finance of Middlesea Insurance plc. Plus, he’s held Financial Controller positions within the manufacturing, consumer retail, contracting and food processing sectors.
Stefan Willcox ACMA – Head of Finance
Stefan is a qualified accountant and responsible for all financial aspects of our business. Before joining us in 2018, he spent nearly 20 years working across a wide range financial services, including banking, life assurance, home emergency services, claims management and insurer relations for home and motor products. During this time he held a broad range of roles encompassing financial control, sales and commercial support, financial planning and analysis and business partnering.
Richard Scott – Head of Claims
Richard is a highly experienced insurance professional and has worked in the industry for over three decades. Since joining us in 2017, he has been responsible for ensuring our Claims operations adheres to Treating Customers Fairly by maintaining the highest governance and compliance standards.
His role also includes auditing third party claims handlers, providing technical support where appropriate and making sure claims and financial MI is accurate and up-to-date.
Prior to being at Building Block, Richard was a consultant and provided his expertise and support across a range of functions, including TPA claims audits, internal claims operations and training. He’s also held positions in general insurance and insurance business development management.
