Meet the team
Andrew Mirfin – Chief Executive Officer
Andrew is responsible for the development of our short- and long-term strategies across the UK and the European Economic Area. He also manages overall operations and is the main point of communication between the board of directors and stakeholders.
He was previously our UK and EEA head of distribution after joining us from NCI Insurance Services. Prior to NCI, Andrew spent four years as head of network sales at Broker Network (2011-2014) and also had previous roles as a regional sales manager with General Accident & CGU.
Joseph Demanuele FCCA FIA CPA – Independent Non-Executive Director
Joseph has been an independent Non-Executive Director since 2018. He also holds NED positions with other insurance entities.
Before retiring from full-time employment, Joseph was COO at the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) where he chaired the Board of Management and Resources. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Malta International Training Centre Ltd (MITC).
Other previous roles include General Manager of Middlesea Valletta Life (MSV), General Manager and Executive Director of Growth Investments Ltd and Senior Manager at Finance of Middlesea Insurance plc. Plus, he’s held Financial Controller positions within the manufacturing, consumer retail, contracting and food processing sectors.
Lawrence Pavia MA, FCII, Chartered Insurance Broker – Independent Non-Executive Director
Lawrence is an independent Non-Executive Director who joined the Board of Directors of BBI in November 2020.
He started his insurance career in 1981 and is presently the managing director of Island Insurance Brokers Limited, a company he set up with other partners in 1989 and which he has built and run since. In addition Lawrence was also involved in insurance management having assisted in the setting up and running of captive insurance companies based in Malta. To date he also serves as a NED on two captives whose groups are Fortune 500 listed, and other insurance entities.
Lawrence specialised in risk management with particular emphasis on property and business interruption, subjects which he used to lecture at the University of Malta. He also served as a director on the board of Malta International Training Centre Ltd (MITC), and as a governor on the board of FinanceMalta representing the interests of the insurance industry. He has also been active in the Association of Insurance Brokers of Malta and served as its Chairman for a number of years.
Other interests include travelling, art and art research.
John Gibson – Chief Underwriting Officer
John is responsible for all aspects of underwriting and pricing across the business. He has over 20 years’ experience underwriting personal lines schemes whilst working for various insurance companies including St Paul International, QBE Europe, Agria International and Zenith. He has been instrumental in developing and managing affinity schemes for a variety of blue chip companies both in the UK and overseas.
John has breadth of experience across a number of different products including pet insurance where he has underwritten in excess of 30 different own brand and affinity branded schemes.
Rob Gwynn, ACMA – Head of Operations
Rob is responsible for managing and monitoring operational performance across all functions along with product development through initial specification, governance and managing the development of new systems and product processes. He is driven by customer outcome and leads projects from concept to delivery by managing relationships with key distribution and claim handling partners.
Rob joined BBI in 2014 and has 20 years’ experience in financial services and insurance. Previous employers include Egg, Citi, Wesleyan and PayPlan.
Richard Scott – Head of Claims
Richard is a highly experienced insurance professional and has worked in the industry for over three decades. Since joining us in 2017, he has been responsible for ensuring our Claims operations adheres to Treating Customers Fairly by maintaining the highest governance and compliance standards.
His role also includes auditing third party claims handlers, providing technical support where appropriate and making sure claims and financial MI is accurate and up-to-date.
Prior to being at Building Block, Richard was a consultant and provided his expertise and support across a range of functions, including TPA claims audits, internal claims operations and training. He’s also held positions in general insurance and insurance business development management.
